what's in my camera bag?

by torie Egger | SEPTEMBER 11, 2o23

Many people have asked me this question and I thought making a blog post about this would be perfect. I’ve started realizing I don’t need to carry around a lot of gear, so I have minimized what’s in my camera bag. Being a western photographer that's usually running around a pasture, it’s easier for me to travel light. Everything is listed is linked in my Amazon Storefront

When it comes to camera bags, I recently made the mistake of buying a camera bag that is just an insert so I had to rig it up with straps. The camera bag I had prior to this one was an amazing camera bag with lots of space. It is called the Go Groove backpack camera bag and it’s $70 on Amazon. I can fit two camera bodies, two batteries, a sd card holder, my laptop, a 70-200 mm lens, a 35 mm lens and still have extra space.

The first thing in my camera bag is my main camera body and that is the Canon R5. I love this camera because the raw images are similar to my old DSLR and the images are crisp. I have used this camera in many different lighting situations and every time it does great. I shoot video as well and it does great with video.

If there is one piece of advice I can give you, it is that you should always carry around a second camera body. This will be a backup camera incase your main body stops working. My backup camera is a Canon R6 and it’s my backup because I wasn’t the biggest fan of it. I noticed my images getting muddy so I switched back to Canon 5d mark IV until I can find the right mirrorless camera for me. The one feature I do love about it is the flip out screen. The flip out screen is helpful because I’m short and shoot live mode quite a bit so I can adjust the screen to see what I’m shooting with my camera up above me.

Whenever I go to a session I always pack extra batteries no matter how long the session will be. I carry two batteries and they fit both my R6 and mark 4. I pack extra so I can switch out batteries when one gets low. I also pack extra SD Cards for when one gets full. I recently learned it’s smart to switch out your memory cards during a shoot incase one goes corrupt, you’ll at least have part of the session. I carry my extra SD cards in a Waterproof SD card holder.

Prior to getting my R5 I used this lens all the time and I love it. But since I got the 28-70 I use it less. It's great for portraits and family sessions.

Another lens I love is the Canon 70-200 mm 2.8. This lens is one I use for all my livestock and western lifestyle work. It’s a heavy lens so I usually pair it with a monopod so I can keep it stabilized better for video. This lens is nice because I don’t need to be close to livestock or I can capture something happening that’s further away from me.

This isn't a product I use very much but I do always keep it in my camera bag incase I have an opportunity to use it. It adds some extra fun colors to your photos and I use it on some of my creative fashion shoots.

One of my most used lenses is the Canon 28-70mm. I use it for the majority of my sessions and I love it. I love that it’s both wide and close up all in one lens.
